GG SAL – June ’16 – Baby J’s Flat Ornament

This is my first post towards the GG SAL hosted by the lovely Jo of Serendipitous Stitching.

In March we celebrated the first birthday of baby J, the son of a dear friend. He is our miracle baby, a bouncing ball of coo’s and giggles who spreads cheer wherever he goes. Needless to say the occasion could not pass without making a little something for him.

I will insert here that I did get the project done in time for the birthday but am only getting around to posting about it three months after the fact. Sighhh… punctuality has never been my strong suit.

I’ve learnt from my past mistakes not to start massive projects as gifts. So this time around I took the smart route and decided to make a small monogram instead.

I was a bit short on time as we were also helping the parents with the party planning and so had to make do with whatever materials I had on hand. The monogram was stitched on 32 count Steel Grey linen with DMC B5200 and a couple of beads. I backed it with some royal blue fabric, added a bead trim, the braided hangar et voila!

The flat cross stitch ornament is a finishing technique that is fast becoming a firm favorite. It is small (a quick finish!), compact (can easily be stored away when not on display), super simple (no need of sewing machines, expensive frames or any other fancy equipment) and above all it looks adorable! I can see a lot more of these in my future!

    Part of a gift is the time spent on it, so you’re doing great there, Auntie Diya. 🙂
    Knowing me, I would probably put the date on there somewhere, in fabric paint on the back, to commemorate it. *sigh* I am so weird about dates, lol. But you’ve commemorated it in a cute blog post, which is way better. 🙂

        I know what you mean about dating everything – when the kids make cards for their dad I still write the date on the back if they forget, lol.

  6. How very pretty. I love the monogram style. Did you sew the backing on? If not, how did you attach it? I am not familiar with the “flat stitch” finishing technique. Very nice sewing, Diya.

    1. Thank you Linda! 🙂 I loved stitching it but the finishing could have been a bit more perfect if I had more time 🙂

      As for technique, the backing fabric is stretched over a piece of cardboard. Likewise the stitched piece is stretched over another piece of cardboard. The 2 sides are then glued together and that’s all there is to it 🙂 Hope that made sense 🙂
