Global warming must be real!

Okay it’s official. Global warming is a reality.

What else could possibly explain the bizarre weather Abu Dhabi has been having this past week?

Weather forecasts had warned residents to expect some rain this week. Hah! Talk about understatement of the century. In spite of the warnings, I doubt anyone was prepared for a deluge of this intensity.

It all started yesterday afternoon. Massive grey clouds hung threateningly over the city. People who had just washed their cars prayed in vain that it would not rain. Not only did it most definitely rain, it was a shower worthy of an Indian monsoon! The waters gushed from the heavens in fat plops that sent wet, chilly residents scrambling for cover. The downpour left many parts of the city flooded.

rainy day 1
Skies starting to clear at around 1 pm on Tuesday

We thought the worst of it was over when the skies cleared up late in the afternoon. Fast forward to half past four this morning. I was jolted out of my sleep by what I thought was a loose gushing pipe thrashing around in the kitchen. I had sinking (pun unintended) visions of a flooded home and hours of pining over drowned appliances and furniture. The thrashing pipe was in fact a hailstorm that lashed our little compound for a good 15 minutes. Needless to say, sleep was an impossibility and I resigned myself to the fact that I would have to show up at work with raccoon eyes.

Hailstones in Abu Dhabi
Hail!

I made my way to work this morning under a menacing canopy of bulging, pendulous clouds. By 11am, the torrents began in full force. The skies darkened abruptly apart from the occasional burst of lightening. Our staff had their noses glued to the windows as everything from plastic bags to PVC pipes were whipped past by the wind. Satellite dishes were loosened and rattled at their moorings yearning to break free and dance in the wind. Rumors started to fly about billboards toppling in Dubai and about roads being shut down.

Fortunately the authorities had the foresight to close all schools for the day. Road accidents are an inevitable side effect of such a storm and it was a relief to know that at least the children are safe and sound. Eventually, even our office came to terms with the fact that things were only going to get worse. In the interest of employees’ safety a notice was issued asking all employees to get home before 2pm as a second storm was expected to hit soon.

I am now typing this from the safety and comfort of my home. But the sights I saw on the drive home rattled me, to say the least. To me, Abu Dhabi has always been a dignified lady with never a hair out of place. Today she looked like she had been caught unawares on a phenomenally bad hair day! Trees were uprooted on the highway and covered two lanes. Traffic signs, traffic cones and garbage cans were toppled over. Bits of construction site partitions lay scattered on the road. Giant pools of water made road lanes near invisible. I hear that things are not as bad within the city but the outskirts are definitely taking a beating. Kudos to the authorities who were already on the scene and assisting where required.

Abu Dhabi rain
Rainy days in Abu Dhabi

I feel like I need to inform the powers that be that this is a desert! Yoohoo… It may be a few measly centimeters of rainfall in the grand scheme of things but we are simply NOT equipped to cope with this much water! Muchos gracias for the showers and all that but I really prefer an Abu Dhabi where I don’t have to wade through ankle deep water in my work heels to get to my car!

On a serious note, as much as I feel the need to find humor in this situation, in my heart I hope and pray that everyone gets home to their families safe and sound.

Hang on my beloved city! We’ll get through this!

  1. Interesting and fun read! Yes, global warming must be real!!! Rains in a desert…hmm…that’s a first! i loved how you compared the city to a lady with not a hair out of place and then said how she was caught unawares 😀 Super job!

  2. I had to read this from first line to last, and you were right on spot with every Intel you brought forth here, i kinda wrote a similar article but i wasn’t attacking to Global Warming and its effect more than i was about humanity. If you would have some time, i think you will like the read…

  3. Really incredible eh? yes, must be the nature warning us of the global warming! I also saw the hail down on our shared gardens with other apartments and I thought I was hallucinating haha! 🙂

    1. It really is alarming how the weather patterns are changing so dramatically! Just this morning we were having a discussion about how here in the desert it’s raining whereas in India it’s boiling!

    1. To be honest it usually doesn’t rain. Except for a few scattered showers in winter. But this year for some reason the weather has been a bit bonkers.

What makes matters worse is that there seems to be a giant conspiracy that it will only rain the day AFTER I wash my car! 😦 Not good. Not good at all.

  4. That is a good topic to talk about.
We all have something or the other to say about it. But the sad truth is, that there are not many who really work in that direction, to really get rid of it, to save our mother Earth.
Well, for the post I would really compliment on how you have portrayed the whole weather around in the city along with the pictures. And that ‘bad hair day’ thing, says a lot!

    1. Sadly, our limited natural resources are something many of us take for granted. And while on the one hand there is a LOT of mindless waste, on the other, people are becoming increasingly aware and taking small steps in the right direction. After all, every drop makes a mighty, ocean right?

And thank you for your kind words about the writing and pictures 🙂

  5. Watching a storm from the safety of one’s home is the best way to view such an awesome weather phenomenon. Watching from the driver’s seat, however, is terrifying. I remember that years ago I had to drive home in a relentless downpour. It was so bad that I couldn’t even see the lines on the road because of the water. Needless to say, I was terrified–and more than relieved when I finally made it home.

  6. Reading this from your perspective, I get a sense of doom that you must have felt as it is rare that you have crazy storms there. It never occurred to me how odd it is to have hail in the deserts, simply because I’ve never once thought of it. Hail…in the desert!! How crazy is that?! We have severe storms where I live (U.S.A.) quite often through out the year, whether it’s rain or snow and sometimes heat. But then again what I consider a heat wave would probably sound ridiculous to you. Glad all were safe through the storm!

    1. I know right? I was just chatting with a friend today about how crazy the weather patterns are getting. We’re almost in April and should have started to feel the summer heat by now. And yet it’s still raining occasionally and weather is pleasant. Makes me dread the upcoming summer as I feel it will be extra hot to compensate 😦

I’m sorry that you have to go through such frequent storms. And a heat wave sounds horrid! At least here we are well equipped to deal with heat. Air conditioning is ubiquitous and we rarely venture outdoors before sunset in the summer. I’m going to miss my pleasant winter days 🙂

      1. I fear that the summer will be extra hot too! And a heat wave here in Michigan means upper 90’s Fahrenheit. That’s probably easy peasy for you!

            1. Gulp! Don’t remind me. I am officially on ostrich mode now and refuse to acknowledge that this summer is going to be a killer 😀

Once we get past Easter this week, I am going to spend every spare second outdoors to make up for all the outdoor fun I will miss! 🙂

  7. Gosh! I hope you’re well. The weather all across the world has been playing havoc. This time Nature’s giving it back to us big time. 😦 Dreading the already-known-to-be-harsh Delhi summers.

    1. Thankfully we are all safe and sound. It really wasn’t too bad. Just that the UAE isn’t really prepared to cope with so much water 🙂

Yes I’ve heard Delhi summers can be brutal. Better lug out all those desert coolers and get ready for the onslaught 🙂

  8. We could see the effect of global warming in India too with unusually warm winter and unseasonal rains. But we’re ourselves to be blamed.

You have a way to play with words. I loved comparison of Abu Dhabi with well groomed lady 🙂

  9. UAE is on my wish list for places to visit. Nice to know it rains there sometimes; I’ve heard the heat can be unbearable in the summer.

If/when I visit, I’d like to check out the music scene; I have a great love for traditional khaliji music.

    1. Oh yes the weather has been a bit unpredictable recently. In fact we’ve had some more showers the past couple of days 🙂

Summers can be a bit harsh but it’s a great place to visit in the winter months. A visit during the DSF could mean some great deals for you.

And it’s so unusual to bump into someone who is into khaliji music. I am curious as to how you got into it 🙂

  10. I love a good storm but prefer one where no one gets hurt! Here in Tasmania we can feel global warming this year. A huge lightning storm set over 80 wildfires going in the wet rainforest coast of our island which raged for weeks . The usual rain would not come to help quench them. Hope your city recovers her dignity soon!

    1. Oh that sounds terrible. I’ve often read about the wildfires in your part of the world and how rapidly they spread. I do hope no one got hurt this time.

The storm here has passed and life has resumed its normal course. We have been having some unexpected rain the past couple of days but nothing as dramatic as last time 🙂

  11. Oh my goodness, what a dramatic day! We do have storms like that in the UK but we are used to them. I don’t think I’ve seen hailstones quite that large though!
You really do have a gift for writing too, I love the way you use the language. It is very evocative.

    1. Yes those hailstones were something weren’t they? And this picture was taken after they had melted down a bit, first on the ground and then in my palm 🙂

Thank you so much for your kind words about my writing. It is always a pleasure to hear that others appreciate your work. I’ll be floating on the wings of your praise for a few days 😉

  12. How scary! There is definitely something going on in the world. Weather patterns have been drastically changed this year. I am glad you are safe and hope that everyone there is ok. Loved how you called Dubai a perfect lady. I do hope that she regains her composure quickly 🙂

    1. Thank you Ginny. By God’s grace we are all fine. There has been minor damage to some homes and about 250 reported road accidents but thankfully nothing fatal.

Meanwhile the city is already dusting herself off and getting back to business as usual 🙂

  13. Diya, I’m so sorry to hear about the damage to your city. The type of storms you experienced are a bit frightening to be sure, but in my area of the U.S., they are common in the late spring months. Last year, I was looking out the window during such a storm, and watched in amazement as a large tree in my complex was completed uprooted and fell over; hitting the roof and patios of the building across from me. Fortunately for those tenants, the damage wasn’t as bad as it looked, and everything was cleaned up by the next day. It’s common for us to have power outages, trash cans, and all types of debris littering roads and yards after a powerhouse thunderstorm.

But we are used to these storms because they happen every year. We just clean up and move on. It must have been very unsettling for you, as they are not so common where you live. And I must say, those hail balls WERE rather large…even for us!

I’m sorry you had to experience this in your beloved city and I’m glad that you and your family are safe and sound. Yes, I believe in global warming too.

Btw, I love your new header and post signature! Very elegant.

    Stay safe,
    Melissa 🙂

    1. Thank you so much Melissa! Reading your long, heartfelt comment meant so much to me! :* Thank you for taking the time to type out all that.

And you’re absolutely right. Our storm was probably a small one but it was the surprise factor that did us in. All said and done it provided quite a bit of excitement for us desert dwellers 🙂 Today the sun is out again and Mother Nature is pretending like nothing ever happened 🙂

It’s unnerving to think you go through this every spring! Hopefully all of you will continue to stay safe and sound!

P.S. Thank you for noticing the new header! 🙂 I’ve been wanting to design something different for a while and this was my first attempt. I’m still not entirely satisfied with it because I feel it doesn’t translate well on smaller screens. So don’t be surprised if it gets tweaked again soon 🙂

  14. Glad to know that you are safe. Have been reading about the rains in Abu Dhabi, its as surprising as snowfall in some parts of Kuwait this year. Who can we blame for the global warming ? We know human race is the main culprit.
    Take care

    1. Thank you Mini. Yes, we are quite fortunate that we didn’t have to deal with any serious damage. Sadly I’m starting to realize that the rest of the city wasn’t quite so lucky. Let’s just hope things settle down soon…
